In 2016, copper, chrome, marble, shabby chic and industrial styling were major trends, but Summer 2017 is set to bring a more playful aesthetic. Bring the outside in with tropical prints, a revival of the banana leaf print that set the trend in 2015. Shabby chic is upgraded this season for vintage elements, whilst geometric design creates a minimalist style; the antithesis of delicate florals, in favour of tessellating patterns, angular lines and linear design.
Furniture
A key trend which can be used throughout the home is multifunctional furniture, keeping a strong sense of style while maintaining space. When thinking about vintage additions, art-deco pieces with soft shapes, mirrored surfaces and brushed brass elements can be used for refined detailing around statement furniture.
Soft Furnishings
Exotic prints with large botanical designs are hugely popular this season. Osborne & Little have created a new collection entitled Enchanted Gardens inspired by woodlands, both native to England and Oriental. Within the collection, Rain Forest, by textile designer Kit Miles, is a fantastical imagining of climbing vines with detailed broad leaves and exotic birds.
This Season’s Colour Palette
As with tropical prints, nature provides this season’s palette of colours with reds, blues, greens and yellows at the forefront. Pantone’s colour of the year, ‘Greenery’, is a fresh and zesty yellow-green and the perfect colour for a focal wall. This vivid green can also be incorporated simply with the addition of botanical prints. Another colour of the year, ‘Denim Drift’ by Dulux, is a steely blue-grey; an adaptable, versatile colour that fits all interior styles.
Farrow and Ball are bringing an array of stunning new colours into your home with their 2017 hues: Radicchio, a strong but sophisticated red; Studio Green, their reflection of a forest’s darker side; Hay, a modest, warm and sunny shade; and All White, where the absence of pigmentation conveys simplicity and freshness.
Lighting
A simple way to incorporate the geometric trend this season is through lighting in mixed metals. Being both a functional and artistic design feature, lighting is the perfect way to showcase a statement trend-led piece. Geometric light fixtures, especially cage style designs, work particularly well in minimalist spaces and can be used as a focal point in dining areas as a modern take on the chandelier.
This season is all in the detail. Carried throughout your home, each room will have its own decorative identity. This season’s colour palette and soft furnishing patterns will create little moments of surprise in their unrestrained boldness, whilst the clean lines of art-deco and geometric shape, in their simplicity, bring nuance and depth to any space.
